ELRC 2008 FALL
CONFERENCE
“Expanding Public Resource Opportunities
Through Acquisitions and Partnerships  –
The Maine Department of Conservation is Your
Co-Host for this Year’s Conference”

September 28 - October 2, 2008
Bethel, Maine

Mark your calendars to attend the ELRC 2008 Fall Conference, September 28 - October 2, in the scenic village and surroundings of Bethel, located in Maine’s Western Mountains near the New Hampshire border.  Bethel has become a four-season destination for
Mainers and visitors alike, particularly this time of year when the fall colors emerge. The conference will be held at the Bethel Inn, within walking distance of local eateries and places to shop(check it out at www.bethelinn.com). The Maine Department of Conservation, Bureau of Parks and Lands will host this years’event, which will include an old fashioned “Maine lobsta bake.” And if you would like to add the Maine coast to your visit, the Portland Jetport is within 30 minutes of some of Maine’s finest beach and coastal destinations. Jetport shuttles, along with coastal tours will be offered within the conference timeframe for those interested.

This year’s theme focuses on the public benefits-side of public land management and the new opportunities now available through the various partnerships and land acquisition projects that have emerged in recent years.  The Inn is a short distance from a variety of state and federal lands including the White Mountain National Forest, Grafton Notch State Park (pictured) the Mahoosuc Public Reserved Lands Unit, and the Umbagog National Wildlife Refuge.  Each of these areas boasts recent initiatives in keeping with the conference theme, including access to important waters, protection of unique natural landscapes, and preserving the Maine forest for both recreation and industry.  This
years’ conference will also conclude with an easement monitoring “round table”hosted by U.S. Forest Service staff, an opportunity to explore in detail issues related to the monitoring of lands acquired through the Forest Legacy Program.
